Bangalore Congestion BBMP parking CBD DULT Media Reports Private transport paid parking congestion charging parking policy

New DULT report based parking policy is accepted by the BBMP concil, unanimousely.
The BBMP Council on Wednesday gave its nod to steep hike in parking fee in the Central Business District (CBD) as recommended by the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT), a subsidiary of the Karnataka government.
Rates are graded based on the category of roads.

Package A is meant for premium parking, package B for business areas and package C for others. In package A, the charge for four-wheelers is Rs 30 per hour and two-wheelers Rs 15. In package B, the DULT recommended Rs 20 per hour for four-wheelers and Rs 10 for two-wheelers. In Package C, four-wheelers will be charged Rs 15 per hour, while two-wheelers will be charged Rs 5.
And linked to WPI:
For revising the parking fee based on wholesale price index (WSPI), a standard formula has been worked out. The equation is: New parking rate = old parking rate x (1+WSPI).
Grand plans include automatic metering systems and the like.
Finally, some congestion charging plans for the city. To make any impact, this one needs much better project planning and execution than BBMP has shown so far. And a lot of coordination amongst other infra / transport agencines. Just hoping this is not just another show and tell for the media.

Wondering if the council resolution is available for us to look at?
BTW, this project is called BIP, Bangalore Initiative for Parking.

Ashwin Mahesh on CM: Our urban planning framework has totally misunderstood the management of parking.

Shouldnt there be reliable PT options before we try congestion charging?
Btw I see this as an opportunity to push cycling, saying 'free parking' for cycles! :P

Very good move by DULT & BBMP. FInally this set of corporators had the guts to push paid parking which is accepted the world over.
"Reliable" PT is a very subjective term. Once Parking becomes charged people will demand better PT. THe policy is clear that cycles will not be charged. Its got the right things in it. Autos & buses & metro will now be used better. You cant legislate taxi services and then create demand, create demand then more shared & public transport modes will open up. In fact the right time to do this was when people started buying cars by the truckload 10 years ago, its never too late though.
Now all advocacy efforts by people should go towards making the system mafia/tamper proof and ensure the funds go to provide more NMT facilities.

...which bring more revenue but with no efforts to be put from BBMP side. Any advise to increase rates would be welcome from BBMP side. But ask them to create new parking spaces in suitable places..they would never respond :(
So no reason to appreciate BBMP
