Traffic Bangalore BETL Elevated Roads Corridors

Good friend Siva mailed in some pics of the elevated road currently under construction.

As per information on Maytas website, the 10 km, Rs 775 crore elevated road should be ready by September 2008. Car happy commuters should love it. I know, the BETL project was conceived at the time when there still were uncertainties over Metro project. But still, the numbers that keep ringing in my mind are - Metro costs Rs 75-80 crore per kilometer, and this thing is close (77.5 crore/km). Lets be ready for a royal crowd at Silk Board junction in the evenings though. 100 kmph to 0 in 10 seconds, followed by a 20-30 minute bumper to bumper through BTM layout or Madivala. What could follow? Perhaps the next elevated stretch from Silk Board to Shoolay Circle!?

Thanks SB and your friend Shiva who saved me the trip to E-city, there were some requests on the status of BETL. India wants to catch up with China, Yesterdays Mint had an article on the front page where our FM was quoted saying the same. http://www.livemint.com/2008/04/22000234/8216We-want-to-catch-up-wit.html Umm The immediate thought that came to my mind was this recently completed the final section of the Pan-Himalayan Golmud-Lhasa railway which is in all about(1956 Kms) at 5072m above MSL, The final section of 1142 Km running across Tibet's snow clad plateau offered some unusual challenges. The engineers had to contend with building on a 550 Km frozen belt with the snow melting and freezing in summer and winter and the workers had to wear oxygen masks. Despite this not a single death was reported. This stretch of 1142 Km was completed in a mere 4 years. (sigh!) BETL - Invitation for more Congestion, more Vehicles

SB - quite right. I think this was not the right thing to have done. In Phase-2, CTTP has recommended a Metro line from EC to Yelahanka - let's hope they take it up instead of putting up a third tier of road/s along Hosur road, because that's what they have brought upon themselves.

What this is going to do is choke up SB junction & then, they will again have to plan an elevated road from SB to Shoolay, & follow that with another from SB to Jayadeva, maybe another from SB to Iblur on Sarjapur road, too - there is simply no end to this road construction nonsense.

Suggestions to reduce Congestion @ BETL

Since the BETL is going to be on toll I have a suggestion that will encourage car users to car pool I am suggesting this as a toll tax Car with 4 occupants - X Rs Car with 3 occupants - 2X Rs Car with 2 occupants - 4X Rs Car with 1 occupant - 8X Rs Public Bus/Ambulance - Free Private Bus/Taxi - X Rs 2 Wheelers - 0.5X Rs Got this idea when i was stuck on Bannerghatta road i noticed that most of the cars were single occupant (including mine!) -- Praveen Sundaram AkA PhotoYogi

Skybus, an indigenous technology would have easily done the trick with a little lesser cost than BETL.  Check out http://www.atrilabs.com

What is more the benefits are substantial if you consider that Skybus has near ZERO EMISSIONS and has much greater capacity and hence much lesser user cost.

BETL is a waste and will only compound the problem by encouraging people to use their cars instead of rail trasport.

aha, mebbe we ought to move the discussion on private-public to a dedicated thread. but this is a concrete, pardon the pun, example of the perils of a lack of proper agnostic 'regulator'. the project was seeded by private citizens acting in their own self interest. but the city is more than the sum of its parts. there are no exits or ramps along the 9 kms. you get in at silkboard, you get down at ec. they couldnt resolve betl vs bmic in the interest of the city. what could have been a mysore road to silkboard corridor is not going to happen because each of the two private players stuck to his guns. the intersection between two major roads should have had a full clover. both of them have toll booths and end points, they couldn't come up with a toll sharing mechanism and coulnt share the cost of re-engineering? about the mess at actual silkboard, the virtual silk board has been wailing about for a long time. mebbe they have designs for silkboard, mebbe they dont we dont know. yogi, good idea, but will BETL do it? mebbe you should start a post on it and circulate it amongst the ec crowd.
