In defence of the traffic police!!

vmenon - 14-MAY-2008

In the "unlocking bangalore" debate I come from 2 or 3 contexts.

a) I believe there is at least 30% capacity on our roads which are wasted by non adherence and non implementation of the law( both traffic laws and a myriad of civic laws )

b) I believe that of the various enforcers/government bodies out there ,the traffic police is one of the better ones , but who are are always at the worst end of the stick, tremendously underresourced and unempowered.

BMTC e-purse to be introduced next week

shas3n - 13-SEP-2007

Yes, it is almost there. In about a week, BMTC will introduce e-purse which can be used to pay for your BMTC tickets instead of cash. The first phase of the roll out will be experimental and this scheme will soon be expanded after KEONICS finds BOOT partners to implement the system. Ella OK but I have some quirks about the way it is implemented.

BMIC updates - Guv proposes, EC disposes

silkboard - 13-MAY-2008

It probably started in late March (28/3/08), when Supreme Court issued notices asking Karnataka government to respond as to why the SC order on BMIC is not implemented. The notice was returnable in six weeks. Fast forward that much time, and on May 7, we were told (TOI - typically pro NICE) that government has issued a go ahead on BMIC:

"... the government has paved the way for completion of the peripheral and link roads, which were stalled by the H D Kumaraswamy government. Besides, an empowered committee headed by chief secretary Sudhakar Rao has been asked to take all necessary steps for early completion of NICE's projects ..."

vivek_shankar153 - 13-MAY-2008

Hello Friends,

Banking an integral part of our lives and we all use some or the other bank.

but Banks in Bengaluru or for that matter Karnataka do not use Kannada to the extent it should be.

the private banks dont use Kannada at all either in customer service, ATM's and so on by and large.

JP Nagar Underpass work starts - a number of roads blocked in JP Nagar

s_yajaman - 13-MAY-2008

Work on the JP Nagar underpass has started at the junction of 24th Main and ORR. They have blocked off a number of roads. Traffic diversions had been announced in the DH dated Apr-29. I found this out only because I went out driving yesterday and found a number of roads blocked and traffic diversions.

How is 18% for majority!?

silkboard - 11-MAY-2008

After casting my vote early in the morning yesterday, while I drove around and was doing some shopping, I was curiously trying to spot the ink on those index fingers. My empirical observations told me that less than 50% of people had taken the trouble of visiting a polling booth. Morning newspapers are saying that Bangalore city areas saw only 44% voter turnout, and I am not surprised.

With three cornered (four, if you add BSP) contests everywhere, it is safe to assume that winning candidate will at best get 35-40% of the votes polled. 40% (winning percentage) of 44% (voting percentage) = around 18%. So, the winning candidates can realistically claim to have support of only 18% of Bangalore's citizens.

No appreciation of 74th amendment

murali772 - 10-MAY-2008

Considering that this was the Assembly election, I had listed what I had called as 'manifesto points' (see this blog of mine) and forwarded them to many NGO's and RWA's for inclusion in their respective lists. The article linked here on CitizenMatters also brings this out clearly. However, this whole election has willy-nilly become more 'Vote Bengaluru' than 'Vote Karnataka'.

30% Reservation for Kannadigas in IT jobs - What do you say?

Vasanth - 10-MAY-2008

Resservation for Kannadigas in IT jobs is an agenda for the JDS party as well as KRV. In a recent discussion in CNN-IBN, Kannadigas expressed it should be whereas outsiders said it as a ridiculous agenda.

One person said that Kannadigas has to come upto the mark and get the job and the education level in Karnataka has to improve!!
