How to root out corruption

murali772 - 2-NOV-2010

All the investigative agencies should be merged into one single agency, the Lokpal. Give it jurisdiction over both bureaucrats and politicians. Give it comprehensive powers to investigate and prosecute the guilty without needing any permission.

Public Consultation Process - Best Practices

kbsyed61 - 31-OCT-2010

With communication becoming part of the life, flow of information and public awareness has tremendously improved all over the world. This scene is no different in India also. With that citizens are increasingly becoming active and demanding their due share of services. Even the political class and the bureaucracy is getting sensitized to these aspirations.

Anti Corruption Parade - Saturday, 11th Dec

murali772 - 29-OCT-2010

A number of NGOs, RWAs and other citizens' organisations in the city have voiced their growing anger at the depths to which politics in the state has plunged. The recent report from Transparency International ranking Karnataka among the most corrupt states in the country has only reinforced a view that is already accepted by many, and regretted by millions.

New scam brewing at BBMP, their infra website, and a simple advice

silkboard - 7-OCT-2010

Recent reports in local dailies suggest that there may have been bogus or excess-spend projects to swindle money at BBMP. Apparently, some works were carried out without following all procedures, and good number of such projects involved road digging or similar work along the Metro corridor (where one would assume Metro itself would have taken up such work). Anyway, nothing new there.

Highest kickbacks - the new norm

murali772 - 19-AUG-2010

While the BJP is rightfully on the offensive against the colossal misdeeds vis-a-vis the CWG, in its own backyard, instances of financial impropriety, though not on such a big scale as in Delhi, have come to light.

Right to Information act (RTI) and transparency

psaram42 - 16-AUG-2010

In this age of the internet and exponential growth of the web, the RTI act 2005 should have been at best, a history by now. It is amazing to read the RTI 2005 document available on the web. It creates posts like Chief Information Commissioner and what not, for providing the so called information. I admit I could not, nor was I interested in reading this kind of document.

Want to know how a govt dept prioritizes things?

silkboard - 15-AUG-2010

Happy I'day to all. Got a proposal for an RTI gig. Would take IDD (Infrastructure Development Department of Govt of Karnataka, currently headed by Mr V Madhu) only as an example, but we could pick any other busy government department as a target. The idea is to find out how the dept decides on the priority of projects it has on hands.

BDA and M/s Simplex Infra - Just Curious

silkboard - 1-AUG-2010

Disclaimer first. Not pointing any fingers here, things are very likely to be squeky clean, and I only have the rights to ask as a citizen. Just curious, and want to know if anyone else noted that Simplex Infrastructure has been awarded almost all Outer Ring Road flyover projects coming up on South/East side of city.

High petrol prices - 59% levies in Bangalore, where does it all go?

Transmogrifier - 7-JUL-2010

[Promoting Transmogrifier's comment to a separate 'crowdsourcing' post - we need to know what is happening to the various taxes and cess that makes petrol so expensive for us. 59% of fuel price is levies, where is it all going today? Do share if you know.]

@ PublicAgenda, while conspiracy theorists make for good movie-making, it's time (like many here are suggesting) that we look at why we pay so much as in the way of levies (59%?) and much worse, get so little. Let's take two examples:

1. In one of the most capitalistic of societies, federal and state taxes, on average, are about 45.6c/gallon (for petrol) or 16.7% at today's price of unleaded petrol. What do you get for that? For 18.4c out of that (or 6-7%) you get 75,000 km of Interstate system on which you could cover 950km (that's the distance to Chennai... and back...and then back again) in 9.5hrs.
