Competition without regulation, like this silkboard - 12-NOV-2008
I see this every other day on my commute, and to many who back competition and liberalization in public transport as a possible solution, this picture represents the fear keeping them from being vocal supporters of the idea. On one side, you have a 3-4 year old nice big bus. Pushing it out of the stand though is a 15 year old vehicle which would be worth a lot less than the bribes it'd take to get operating licenses from RTO. |

The presence of buses at the flagging-off ceremony seems to have been symbolic, as was the schedule given by the depot and the confirmation by officials that the buses were in operation. And as of this morning, more than a week later, the opinionforming, feedback-providing public is yet to make its acquaintance with the mysterious Marco Polo. |

The sole 50-bed burns ward in the state at Victoria Hospital is in a pathetic state. Broken window panes, improper ventilation, fading walls, broken bathroom doors and shortage of sufficient cubicles for the privacy of the patients, are the other ills dogging the ward. The hospital authorities blame the PWD for the sorry state of affairs. |
